- Mario Alberto: this is pulsar 107.3, San Diego, good morning Tijuana. Today it went viral that singer Juan Gabriel died from a heart attack at his home in Santa Monica, California. His last concert was in Los Angeles and I remember my colleague Iveth Rivera reported to us that during his concert the singer had to have four different chairs around the stage so he could take a lot of breaks since he became tired very easily and he looked to be in poor health. Let’s talk with our expert this morning, cardiologist Dr. Lorenzo Arce, good morning.
- Dr. Lorenzo Arce: Good morning Mario Alberto, good morning everybody.
- Mario Alberto: A very good morning, and thank you for taking our call and our invitation to speak here at Mornings Mario Alberto. Well as you heard the sad news that’s spreading all over the world about the death of the singer Juan Gabriel from a heart attack, a massive heart attack? No? This morning we wanted to ask you about that… What led to Juan Gabriel to a massive heart attack?
- Dr. Lorenzo Arce: Yes, of course… we are all very moved by this news, the basic cause of sudden death from a massive heart attack is the acute obstruction a coronary artery, in this case an injury to that vessel. Imagine a tree, an injury to a side branch of that tree is not the same as a massive injury to the root of that tree. When obstructions occur at the root of the tree they are suddenly blocked the heart is left without circulation and that leads to sudden instant death.
- Mario Alberto: Now, another thing we wanted to learn, what are the things that can lead to a heart attack?
- Dr. Lorenzo Arce: It’s a matter of fact, there are a lot of studies and publications around the world, like at this moment the European Cardiology Congress is taking place, they review every year all those risk factors and it has been determined those that are older than 50 years old, male gender, with genetic predisposition, meaning a close relative that has had a heart attack. Also persons that have diabetes, that have hypertension, high cholesterol, that are sedentary, that live under a lot of stress, are obese have an increased risk of developing obstructive plaqu in the coronary arteries which are the ones in charge of blood flow to the heart.
- Mario Alberto: Is there a possibility that Juan Gabriel died from excess of work, as they said his health was not that well, and on top of that he did not want to stop performing, he did not want to stop performing for his fans.
- Dr. Lorenzo Arce: This disease can be without symptoms, it can present as chest pain, it could present as shortness of breath which would be what we call angina, all of this is related to being out of shape, being overweight living with excessive workloads, somebody that’s not healthy or is not getting proper care, or not getting regular medical evaluations, does not complete annual checkups or is not cognizant of the importance of all of these factors not only when you are working, but also exercising, or traveling, anyone can suffer from coronary artery disease and not know it .
- Mario Alberto: I want to thank you for all of this information and for accepting our invitation, this is doctor cardiologist Lorenzo Arve, if you could please share your contact information with us, where can patients contact you if they would like to get any of these tests done or would like a consultation with you.
